Dear Media: No one really cares about Tiger. Stop talking about it already.

Well, I didn't really care about it since he's not my hero, I don't look up to him and don't really think he's a model for anything other than playing good golf and Buicks, at least until they created this hilarious game out of recent events.

At the same time, can I say that, were I to care, would you (media, general public, whomever) please stop calling an affair Tiger had a "mistake"? It's not a mistake. He did it purposely, and that is wrong. No mistake about it - it's more than a mere "mistake."

My mission: Shoes and something white to go with a red ball skirt to wear to the bow ball on Saturday.

What I accomplished last night instead:

Successful, yes? Ah, Steve Madden: how I love thy shoes. Sure, I can't really wear them with a red ball skirt, but I'm wearing them today, and I like them very much. And they were only $17! And to top things off, I did very well in the steering-clear-of-boots department, at least. I only looked at some wellies, but didn't buy any ('cause they should be houndstooth checked or polka dotted, really, and they didn't have any I liked).

Is it shallow to be thankful for sports? Probably.

Dear Internet,

I had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend. On Wednesday, I scoured my apartment clean, and made some apple crisp and cranberry salad dressing and stuff. I also took a 6K on the erg, which then justified eating everything in sight the next four days (and maybe also not getting out of my pajamas and watching a James Bond marathon all day on Friday). On Thursday, it was off to Aunt Sharon and Uncle Jack's for dinner and such. We already know what I didn't do Friday (anything), and on Saturday, I still pretty much lived in my PJs. Yesterday was slightly back to normal, ending the weekend with orchestra rehearsal.

Internet, I sincerely hope that the Golden Gophers men's basketball team figures out how to a) hit free throws, and b) get more offensive rebounds...or any rebounds, really. But seriously? If a team only has, what, maybe 50% shooting, don't you think you'd stick around to maybe see if it goes in and then maybe grab those boards? Um, apparently not in the Goofy Gophers' situation. Thursday night was a fun game, but the rest of the 76 Classic was quite painful to watch. I love Tubby, Internet, but maybe he could please work on these things with the team.

Also, Internet: I would suggest that Bernard Berrian's biceps/triceps are bigger than his calves. Seriously. His ankles and feet almost look dainty. But who cares if he keeps catching passes and the Vikings keep winning?

p.s. I got the new boots and they are FABULOUS!

My Holiday Exercise Regimen: a guide to Minny LinnEy's successful weight-lifting program

Need a little exercise after the Thanksgiving feast? Christmas parties around the corner? Holiday food weighing you down? Try this program today!

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.

After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks. Then try 50-lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to the point where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level.)

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.

*I received this a couple years ago as an exercise program for people over 50, but I think it can be used by anyone, particularly those of us who are currently doing winter training, so I'm dusting the regimen off, and I'm sure I'll be faster on the water next summer because of it.

Musical Notes, or Notes the Sight-Reader Wishes She Could Read

Dear Internet,

Maybe I should be concerned. Maybe I should see someone about this. Or maybe it only means that I am really competitive. See, I have this playlist on my iPod to enjoy while I erg at the club. I have searched through many songs to come up with a good, lively playlist - you know, the kind that is uptempo and makes you want to pull harder - with a few slower songs at the end for a cool down. And it's got to be rather extensive, this playlist - I need it to last 90 minutes, I have to use it all winter, and I don't want to get sick of it. And see, I can't really listen to much of my beloved classical music other than for warm up because there are too many variations in tempi, volume and such. So anyway, it is now apparent to me that half the songs on the list lately are, uh, rather violent in nature, at least when it comes to titles: Heads Will Roll. Shut Up & Let Me Go. Songs like that. I mean, even the slower stuff I'm liking lately is a tad too much, maybe: People Gotta Lot of Nerve. Bang, Bang, My Baby Shot Me Down. Now this last one is classic Nancy Sinatra, but still!

Maybe it just means that I want to annihilate the competition next summer, so I've chosen appropriate workout music to help me do that. Um, yeah: let's go with that last one.

In other music news of note, I played my violin a lot this weekend, and have realized that I need a new shoulder rest. The rubber grips on the old one are cracking, and this makes it pop off while I'm playing, and that's not very good, Internet. Plus, I've had this one for a very, very long time, and the foam-y stuff it's made out of seems to be compressing because of use. I think it's time for a new one. Do you think you could help me with this one? Do I go with the same kind I've had for half my life? Or do I go with a different model made by the same excellent shoulder rest company? Or do I go with a new company this time? Oh, the choices. And even though this will cost about 1/3 to 1/5 of the price of those boots of last week, I'm agonizing over this decision way more.

Ever Yours (except on weekends 'cause I'm really too busy for you then),

I donated my credit card company's $ to nonprofits of my choice...

...and didn't even realize it at first.

The other day was a dollar match day through GiveMN.org, and I donated money to two organizations that day. Unbeknownst to me, I did it for free, not using any of "my" money. My credit card company gave me a credit on the same day because of all those handy little points I've been accumulating (and not really doing anything with), and this essentially evened everything out.

Too bad I didn't know about this at the time, or I probably would've doubled my donations (since I was willing to part with the money in the first place), which would've really resulted in quadrupling the money I would've put out: 1 part from me, 1 part from my credit card company, and 2 parts match. (That's the real point of this post: doesn't it make you feel better that a credit card company who is raising interest rates through the roof for many people nowadays is actually unwittingly sending that money on in charitable giving? I like that idea.)

I am grateful to be in a financial position to be able to donate money to worthy causes, and I pray that people are blessed through giving and in receiving during this Thanksgiving season (and again at Christmas time).

Oysters Make Magic Sauce

It took me three hours (yes, you read that right: 3. Whole. Hours.) to cook, chop, dip, roll, and then cook again 50 egg rolls. Now I remember why I haven't made them in years. I am not fast, nor are my fingers that nimble, and wouldn't I rather just pay some nice Asian people $5 to give me some egg rolls? Yes. Sure, the egg rolls tasted delicious, but I am way too lazy for this. Sure, I knew exactly what went in them, but once in a while, don't you just want to go to a sketchy Chinese place and wonder what on earth they've put in your food?

Anyway, this time I did things a bit differently, though, and I loved the result.

1) I used real ginger. I am a fan of ginger. I could just eat plain ginger straight and not bat an eye. Mixing it with the meat (beef and pork) while you cook it? Fantastic.

2) I used oyster sauce. Now, this is not sauce made by cute little oysters. It's sauce made from the cute little oysters, and it is delicious. And the texture of it is totally bizarre! In my opinion, it's probably the food equivalent of mercury. It's all liquidy and syrupy but it stays together and does not drip everywhere accidentally. Voilà! Magic sauce.

3) I quit using a recipe. Oh, wait - that's not new. Unless I'm baking, I frequently don't bother with following a recipe too closely. I consult two or three of them, compare the ingredient list, pick out my favorites from each, and then mash it together. And then I don't bother actually reading the directions or measuring anything, either. And you know, if you pick out your favorite ingredients (ginger, oyster sauce, green onions, you know: those kinds of things), and do a couple of taste tests while you cook, somehow things seem to work! Imagine that.

Finally, two more reasons to never cook egg rolls: 1) Your home smells like a fast food restaurant afterwards from cooking with all that oil. Oh, well. At least when I aired out the house last night while cleaning up, the temperature outside was above freezing. And this whole temperature thing leads me to 2) You burn the roof of your mouth because you try to eat them when they're still too hot. (And then if you're dumb and impatient like me, you do it a second time, about 20 minutes after the first time.)

It Is Well With My Soul, or alternately, My Sole is Well-Heeled.

They say that girls like buying shoes. While this may be true for most, it's even more true for me when it comes to getting new boots. Since I live in the place of eternal cold and snow I buy a new pair of boots and maybe a coat, too, every year.

Earlier this fall, while trekking across Vermont, my cousin said we HAD to go to this store: Well Heeled. Guess who walked out of that store with (figuratively speaking, what with handy plastic) less in her wallet? Me. That's right. I bought these gems:

And then loved them so much, I went online today to purchase these beauties:

Now, I know what you're thinking: they look a lot alike. And I'll admit, they do. But see, the difference is that the red ones are red, and the brown ones are brown. Also, the brown ones have buttons. Aren't the buttons pretty? I thought about getting the brown ones in black, but they would look too much like I've stepped out of a Charles Dickens novel and chosen a new career in scullery-maiding. Not exactly the look I'd go for.

Also: I really HATE ordering boots online. Or any shoes, for that matter. Because seriously? How do you know if they'll fit? And, oh, the troubles of shipping stuff back. Plus, I HATE paying to send stuff back. But I figured it was okay in this situation since both pair are made by the same company and have the same dimensions, and therefore I think they'll work. And better still, I got free shipping! Yay! I can't wait for them to arrive so I can try them on! (!!!)

I know the free world will hate me when I say this, but as much as I like getting new boots, I don't always like shopping for them because the calf portion of the boot is never made for people like me: I always look like I'm wearing the mid-calf version of hip waders. They're supposed to be knee-high, they're really mid-calf. They're supposed to be tight around the calf, I could fit both my calves in one. Normally I don't go for the slouchy look, either, (whether intended to be slouchy by design or just because they dribble down one's calves but aren't supposed to) but in the case of these boots, it seems to work on and for me. So am I justified in buying two nearly identical pairs of boots? Why yes, yes I am, especially since it can be such a challenge to find good boots.

All-American: I watched some football and ate some food this weekend.

Dear Internet,

I cheated on you Sunday and spent the afternoon with your brother, Television. See, he was playing the Vikings-Lions game, and you must realize by now that that would take priority with me. Internet, the Vikes did not play all that well, but they won, and that is what counts. I hope they're done with their sloppy play now, and continue to win the rest of this season. And you know something? Fox is trying to get everyone to send in names for the new defensive line. Although I like some of the new names suggested (like Minnesota Maulers or the Four Horns of Horror), I think revisiting the Purple People Eaters is just fine.

Thanks to my mother, I now have a new favorite Thai restaurant: True Thai. Internet, you say wonderful things about this place, and they are all true. It was delicious, and I'll definitely be going back. And after that, my mother informed me of a great Asian market called United Noodles. I saw things there that I'd never seen before (and will probably never cook with, but hey! whatever: it was a learning experience). Let's just say I went with more traditional ingredients, and now I have to make egg rolls and stuff this week.

Internet, my final complaint is that I have this awful cough that just will not go away. I should probably go to the doctor...I bet I have pneumonia or some such thing. But if it's not and is just some crazy virus, they're not going to do anything for me anyway, and I HATE the thought of sitting in a doctor's waiting room, waiting for absolutely nothing.

xoxo,
Minny LinnEy
